Case study · Alternative education
Liminal CIC is an alternative education provider supporting some of the most vulnerable students. We set up their LGfL connection, firewall and Wi-Fi so staff and students each get their own network, with filtering and safeguarding built in from the start.

What we did
LGfL connection, firewall and staff and student Wi-Fi
Built with
LGfL, Cisco firewall, TP-Link Omada access points, VLANs
The challenge
Staff and students needed reliable Wi-Fi, but a school serving vulnerable young people cannot have them sharing one open network.
Student devices had to be filtered and monitored in line with KCSIE online safety expectations.
Staff laptops and student Chromebooks needed separate networks so students could never reach staff systems.
The building had a single cable run and access point, so the separation had to happen in software, not new wiring.
A small team needed a set-up they could rely on without day-to-day IT staff on site.
What we did
We used VLANs to run two secure networks over the existing cabling, with the firewall controlling who can reach what.
The site connects through LGfL (London Grid for Learning), the schools network service, giving web filtering designed for education and the safeguarding tools schools rely on.
Why it matters
For a provider working with vulnerable young people, online safety is not an add-on. Separating and filtering student traffic at the network level means safeguarding does not depend on every device being set up perfectly.
We help schools, alternative provision and small organisations set up networks that are secure, filtered and easy to manage.
